Worldliness in Oak Hill

The Oak Hill World's Fair Wild West Show

Yesterday afternoon I headed out to the Oak Hill World's Fair, a rather ramshackle event that hopes to foster the Oak Hill community spirit and benefits the Oak Hill Trail Association and various parks around the area.

I went mainly because I figured it would be a train wreck -- when Man Shac texted me "someone just got bucked off a horse during the wild west show and had to be taken out by an ambulance," I knew I needed to go see it for myself. The $8 admission seemed like a small price to pay for some seriously blog-worthy shenanigans. I was a little less convinced when I arrived and saw this.

Really?

Aside from a near-death zip line incident (note to patrons of the World's Fair: if caution tape is blocking off an area, it is perhaps best not to step over the caution tape with your three year old daughter unless you are prepared to hit the ground), things were pretty tame. It was definitely the place to be if you were a local politician. State Rep. Valinda Bolton was in attendance, promoting the new proposed improvements for Highway 71 aka "Blood Alley." She also had some interesting literature I picked up regarding the traffic mess that is Austin roads and I noticed this interesting statistic from the Statesman: Austin remains the nation's most congested medium-sized city (as of September 2007). I concur.

Justice of the Peace Susan Steeg was at the booth next to Valinda Bolton. Steeg helped me out of my Precinct 3, three year speeding ticket fiasco, so I got a chance to thank her in person (although she wouldn't shake my hand due to "public health reasons" -- how does a politician get away with not shaking hands?). Her booth was promoting the renaming of the Precinct 3 building (which I know is called "Building B" after my many, repeated visits there during the fiasco). I filled out a form supporting naming the building after the late Governor Ann Richards, who I never knew until yesterday was commissioner in this very precinct.

(yes, that is a petting zoo in the background -- you can't beat Texas politics!)

I also spied Council Member Jennifer Kim, who seemed to have tailor-made Oak Hill fliers asking for the community's support in the election on May 10th and declaring her a good friend of Oak Hill's. She's not the most popular person in town, but I plan on voting for her.

Aside from politicians, there was free (!!) beer (thank you, crazy Texas liquor laws, sometimes you do come in handy) and a "classic car show." The "classic car show" consisted of two cars that perhaps were classic, with their hoods open, and a 2002 F-150. All of the cars were inconspicuously for sale. If you blinked, you'd miss it.

Classic.

As a side note to the event organizers: You might not want to have the "wild west show" involve random men on horse back riding around through the crowd and then suddenly yelling "I want to talk to the Sherrif!" and shooting authentic-sounding guns. Something about enacting people getting shot and killed in the midst of a crowd of families and politicians just didn't seem to go over well. Maybe it was the crying children or the uncomfortable looks on everyone's faces during the show, but it seemed a little frightening to me. The Vietnam vet hobbling by with the cane didn't seem to appreciate it either.

Four Three words: Only. In. Oak Hill. Austin. Texas.

Teaser: Why on earth would I be in the possession of fourteen (yes, I counted) golf pencils, acquired this weekend at Hula Hut? Check back soon for an exciting answer!

what time were you at the oak hill thing? RTBD was there with his jazz band. They played at 6 I think! He had some interesting commentary about the event too!

PS: the pencil thing is too easy. Why does HH have golf pencils?
